Security of school children cannot be entrusted to Ebubeagu, but teachers – Ebonyi Commissioner, Chima

Ebonyi State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Onyebuchi Chima at the weekend said the security of school children in the state cannot be entrusted in the hands of Ebubeagu security outfits and Police but teachers.

Chima made this known during a joint press briefing with the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Mr. Charles Akpa-enika, which took place at the Ochi- Udo city, Abakaliki capital of Ebonyi state.

He said the Ministry of Education was ready to use sports in the various schools to entrench peace and order in the state.

“We are using the sporting events to bridge the fear that is so much ensued in our children as a result of the security challenges going on in our country in particular our state.

“We finished successfully the local government sports events that took place at the thirteen local government areas of the state and now we have entered into zonal sports activities stage.

“Ebonyi State remains the safest place for our children, especially as our teachers will open schools on Monday.

“Security remains the business of everybody and not only for the government. The government will not be safe if the society is not safe and so, whether it is the right time to have this sports competition, is not the issue but I tell you, sports activities brings peace.

“This ongoing sports competition in the state will not affect the school calendar and I assure parents and teachers that it will not in any way affect our school calendar.

He further said facilities have been made available to assist in the provision of healthcare service delivery to the school children during the sports competition.

“The security of our school children as regards this sports competition cannot be entrusted in the hands of Ebubeagu and police but in the hands of those who know how to take care of children and they are teachers.

“And so, the security of our school children is first entrusted in the hands of God and to the professionals who knows how to take care of children” he stated.

On his part, the commissioner said the governor has empowered youths more than the previous administration in the state.
